<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:7.5pt"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">As part of celebrating the Library of Michigan's 195th anniversary, the Library's Special Collections staff paid homage to all the past
 employees who served the state library by recreating a photograph of former State Librarian Mary Spencer and her staff in 1895. At the time the photo was taken, the state library was located in the west wing of the Michigan State Capitol, having moved there
 when the capitol building opened in 1879. The current staff at the Library of Michigan continues to build on the stewardship and service of the past generations of library staff that came before.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<span style="color:#006EB6">Heritage Hall</span></a>. Facilitated by the Michigan State Capitol Commission and the Capitol's Tour, Education and Information Service, Heritage Hall is an underground visitors center and event space that is the new entryway for
 visitors entering the Michigan State Capitol. It includes expanded tour orientation rooms, history exhibits, an artifact conservation space, a large meeting space, and more to accommodate the thousands of visitors that come to the capitol building.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:7.5pt"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">A favorite part of the tour was seeing a portion of the exhibit space currently highlighting the Library of Michigan's history within
 the capitol. The state library collections spent time in all 3 of Michigan's capitol buildings, starting in the territorial courthouse in Detroit and later in both the 2nd and 3rd capitol buildings in Lansing. The need for expanded collections and staff space
 would eventually lead to the bulk of the state library moving to the main floor of the new (Elliott-Larsen) State Office Building at the corner of South Walnut and Kalamazoo Streets. The Law Library staff and collections remained at the Capitol until 1969,
 when they moved into the G. Mennen Williams state office building on Ottawa Street. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:7.5pt"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">The display also highlighted the tenure of former State Librarian Harriet Tenney, the first female Michigan State Librarian as well as

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:7.5pt"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">The Juneteenth holiday is derived from when Union Army General Gordon Granger landed at the Texas port city of Galveston in 1865 as the
 Civil War ended. One of General Grangers first actions was to read General Order #3 on June 19, 1865, which stated that all slaves are free and that former masters and slaves have absolute equality of personal and property rights. The Emancipation Proclamation,
 signed on Jan. 1, 1863, legally freed all slaves in the U.S., but slavery was not yet fully abolished during the period leading up to the Civil War's end. The day the announcement was made became known as Juneteenth.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

July 4th was proclaimed the day America became a free nation. But for more than a century afterIndependence Day, Black Americans remained enslaved.  The Emancipation Proclamation, signed on Jan. 1, 1863, legally freed all slaves in the U.S., but slavery was
 not yet fully abolished. It wasn't until about two years later on June 19th, 1865, that Gen. Gordon Granger officially declared from the president of the United States that all slaves were freed. The day the announcement was made became known as Juneteenth.<br>
