NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

ALA report shares findings, illustrates successes from 10 years of the American Dream Literacy Initiative
A newly released American Library Association (ALA) report marks the 10th anniversary of the American Dream Literacy Initiative and celebrates the many ways that participating public libraries have transformed lives, strengthened their communities, and advocated tirelessly for adult literacy and lifelong learning.
Funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the American Dream Literacy Initiative offers grants to U.S. public libraries to expand services for adult English language learners (ELL) or adults in need of basic education and workforce development. More than $1.5 million in funding has been distributed to 188 libraries since the program?s inception, reaching approximately 25,000 English language learners.
Free webinar shows how to harness the power of face-to-face conversations
At 1 p.m. Eastern on Friday, August 17, during the webinar ?Collaborating with Strangers: Facilitating Workshops in Libraries, Classes, and Nonprofits,? Bess G. de Farber and April Hines will discuss how CoLABs have connected people to new networks and resources. You'll gain an understanding of how CoLABs have been used in communities to reveal hidden assets as well as guidance on how their How-To-Do-It Manual can be used to facilitate these workshops.
Interaction with strangers cultivates creativity and provides opportunities for joining forces to achieve great ends. However, most people tend to avoid talking or working with people they do not know, whether in the library, a classroom, or in academic and nonprofit settings. And to do so is to short-circuit much of the creative potential that is so necessary for innovation, and that organizational stakeholders crave. Enter CoLAB, a workshop developed and presented by Bess G. de Farber at workshops across the country, and used by de Farber and April Hines to successfully spur collaboration at the University of Florida.

MCLS is looking to begin a new partnership with Vidcode. Vidcode was founded in 2014 and provides an accessible and fun way to learn to code. Focused on 3rd through 12th-grade students, but great for any age, Vidcode courses are student-led and web-based - no download required. Plus, Vidcode courses were built specifically around what students are interested in coding; students learn to code through creating meme makers, Snapchat filters, and special effects.

Students can use Vidcode?s courses on their own, like courses from Lynda.com. Or, librarians and educators can lead students through the material using Vidcode?s lesson plans and classroom-in-a-box, created for non-technical and technical teachers alike.

If you would like to participate in a purchase or trial, please let me know.
Just the other day the Michigan Supreme Court made a decision that allows
schools to ban guns, which they could not do before. I know Capitol Area
District Library took this question to a higher court a few years ago and
lost. Any chance we can now get libraries added since the supreme court
decision re schools.
