</span></b><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Wanda Brown, director of Library Services at the C.G. O’Kelly Library, Winston-Salem State University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, has been elected president-elect
 of the American Library Association.<br>
Brown received 6,066 votes, while her opponent, Peter Hepburn, head librarian, College of the Canyons, Santa Clarita, California, received 4,066 votes<br>
As ALA president, Brown will be the chief elected officer for the oldest and largest library association in the world.  She will serve as president-elect for one year before stepping into her role as president at the close of the 2019 ALA Annual Conference
 in Washington, D.C.<br>

</span></b><span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The American Library Association (ALA) announced the outcomes of three ballot measures regarding a proposed membership dues adjustment and an amendment to ALA executive
 director education requirements.  <br>
The proposed amendment to ALA Policy A.4.1.1, which would require ALA’s next executive director to hold an ALA-accredited master’s degree was not approved. A minimum of 25 percent of ALA members was required to vote in order to carry the amendment forward.
 A total of 10,405 voted on this question, representing 20.79 percent of the eligible voters. 3,890 voted for MLS preferred, and 6,515 voted for MLS required. The Executive Board will now proceed with planning for the search process.
<br>
By a vote of 7,663 to 2,684 personal member dues will increase between $1 and $5 in September 2018, depending upon the membership type. On a separate measure, by a vote of 7,420 to 2,862, ALA members approved a dues adjustment that will increase association
 dues over the next five years not to exceed the percentage change in the national average Consumer Price Index (CPI), with the review and approval of the ALA Executive Board.<br>

 Councilor-at-large. The committee will select two candidates to run for President-elect, two candidates to run for Treasurer, and no fewer than 50 candidates for the 33 at-large Council seats to be filled in the 2019 spring election.<br>

 the federal E-rate program to improve broadband access in Tribal and rural areas. The discussion, moderated by National Museum of the American Indian Librarian Elayne Silversmith, focused on how broadband connectivity and telecommunications infrastructure
 in Tribal and rural regions advances education, provides economic opportunity and can close the digital divide.

"For many people in Tribal and rural areas, the lack of high-speed internet access means that competing in today’s economy is a steep climb and becoming steeper," said ALA President Jim Neal. "Public libraries across America provide internet-enabled technologies
 and other resources to meet the needs of their communities. And yet Tribal and rural library broadband capacity currently falls far short of the FCC’s benchmarks set for U.S. home access."
